1. From One Engine to another

Park the assisting car close enough so that your jumper cables reach from engine to engine (and make sure both cars are off!).

2. Look for Leaks

If your dead battery is leaking anything, stop—the fluid could be dangerous.

3. Connect the Cables

Starting with the positive jumper cable, attach first to the positive terminal of the dead battery, then to the positive terminal of the assisting battery. Do the same with the negative cable.

4. Let the Juice Flow

Start the engine on the assisting car and rev it moderately. After a moment, start the engine on the disabled vehicle and let it run for a few minutes.

5. Remove in Reverse, and Roll Away

Finally, remove your jumper cables in the reverse order of which they were connected. When they’re safely away, and the hood is back down, you’re ready to go.
