Volkswagen supports the retrospective exhibition „Alibis“ (March 14 – July 5) at the Museum Ludwig in Cologne.Today’s press conference gave an introduction to the upcoming comprehensive retrospective dedicated to Sigmar Polke. Staged in Cologne, Polke’s wide-ranging and influential work is going to be presented in the urban environment of his former place of artistic creation.

Honoring one of the most important German postwar artists, Volkswagen Group assists in connecting America and Europe. Further to the support granted by Volkswagen Group of America for the Sigmar Polke retrospective at the New York based Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), Volkswagen and Museum Ludwig have successfully collaborated in bringing the exhibition to Polke’s home country. Developed by MoMA, the retrospective enables Museum Ludwig to build on its existing Polke collection and provide an exceptional overview on the multifaceted work of the painter, photographer and filmmaker including displays of many drawings, prints and Polke’s films which have been rarely shown publically before.

Globally recognized for his experimental work, Sigmar Polke is among the most influential artists of the postwar generation. Born in 1941, Polke began his creative work in the 1960s with paintings containing critical and ironic views on the society. Throughout his career, he stirred debates by looking for new ways of creative expression and reflecting social and political themes in his work. Museum Ludwig presents around 250 works from all eras of Sigmar Polke’s creative life that tragically ended in 2010 with his death in Cologne.

“Visitors of Museum Ludwig will experience the highly inspiring work of a strongly individual creative character that has become an aspiration for many people. That’s why we are sincerely grateful to be able to continue our engagement and contribute to the presentation of this important retrospective at Cologne, a place of special importance for Polke’s life”, explains Benita von Maltzahn, Head of Cultural Engagement and Sponsoring, Volkswagen Group Communications.
