2016 GM Canada / Unifor Bargaining

The current GM Canada/Unifor contract expires at 11:59 p.m. on September 19, 2016 for the National Master Agreement, which covers approximately 3,860 hourly employees – 2,400 at the Oshawa Assembly Plant, 1,400 at St. Catharines Propulsion Plant and 60 at our Parts Distribution Centre in Woodstock Ontario.

These negotiations do not include the CAMI Assembly Plant collective bargaining agreement, which covers 2,600 hourly employees at our plant in Ingersoll, Ontario. That agreement expires on September 17, 2017.

Employment From GM Canada Operations

  • GM Canada directly employs approximately 8,400 employees in Canada (6,500 hourly + 1,900 salaried)
  • GM Canada is responsible for indirectly employing a further 1,350 contract support employees, primarily in Oshawa in our OnStar customer support operations.
  • 4,856 of our total direct and indirect jobs are in Oshawa.
  • In June 2016, we announced 700 new engineering and software jobs will be added in Oshawa, Markham and Toronto.
  • Through our GM Canada pensions, we support approximately 30,300 hourly retirees and 7,000 salary retirees in Canada.
  • GM Canada pensions are strong and funded through our ongoing Canadian sales operations. In 2009, we strengthened our pensions funding with a C$4 billion payment and we continue to meet all Ontario requirements for solvency funding.
  • By 2019 the percentage of hourly employees who are eligible for full retirement are:

    • Oshawa Assembly Plant – 75%
    • St. Catharines Propulsion – 99%
    • Woodstock PDC – 85%
    • CAMI Assembly Plant– 53%
       
  • In 2015, GM Canada increased its market share to 13.6% and sold 263,335 vehicles through Canada’s largest dealer network of 451 dealerships.

    • Canada is GM’s 5th largest sales market by country.
    • Canada is the 3rd largest Cadillac market in the world.
    • Canada is the 2nd largest GMC market in the world.

Investments in GM Canada Operations

  • Since 2009, GM has invested more than C$3 billion in our manufacturing and engineering operations in Canada.

  • CAMI Assembly Plant, Ingersoll – Chevrolet Equinox and the GMC Terrain
  • Oshawa Assembly Plant – Chevrolet Equinox (Consolidated Line), Chevrolet Impala, Buick Regal, Cadillac XTS (Flex Line)
  • St. Catharines Propulsion Plant – V6, V8 engines, front wheel drive transmissions
