Oshawa, ON (October 25, 2013) — General Motors of Canada welcomes today’s announcement from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) that the Automotive Partnership Canada program will provide more than $2.6 million in support of a four year research project at the University of Waterloo in Sustainable Lightweighting Technologies.

“GM is proud to be a leading supporter of collaborative research in Canada,” said Justin Gammage, Chief Scientist, General Motors of Canada.  “These partnerships are important, delivering results that benefit the automotive industry and beyond, helping us ensure that we provide the best products and services for our customers.”

Reducing the weight of a vehicle can have a significant effect on fuel consumption. The goal of this project with GM’s research partners at the University of Waterloo, is to design and test undercarriage parts made from aluminium alloys that could be used in mid-size cars like the Chevrolet Malibu and Buick Regal and full-size cars like the Chevrolet Impala.
