“The 25-millionth engine underscores the longstanding success story of engine production at Audi Hungaria. Nearly all engines in Audi models come from Győr,” pointed out Dr. Frank Dreves, Board of Management Member for Production at AUDI AG. “Audi Hungaria therefore has a special strategic importance within the Audi Group. The company makes a major contribution to our growth strategy,” continued Dreves.
Audi Hungaria has been producing high-tech engines for the Volkswagen and Audi Group for 20 years. At present, there are 235 engine versions in the product offering with from four to twelve cylinders and power output of 63 kW/86 hp to 419 kW/570 hp. Approximately 5,400 employees produce more than 8,100 engines every day.
“Our success is based on the high quality of our engines, our dedicated workforce and continuous technological progress,” stated Achim Heinfling, the head of engine production at Audi Hungaria. “Not only have we proven our worth in the Volkswagen and Audi Group in the past two decades, we are meanwhile the biggest engine producer in the world.”
Engine production in Győr started in 1993 with an advance series, and series production of the four-cylinder five-valve engine started in 1994. Since 1997, six- and eight-cylinder V-engines have been produced at Audi Hungaria; since 2000, four-cylinder inline diesel engines as well.
The jubilee engine is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder TFSI. The gasoline engine generation with direct duel injection (FSI) was included in the product range in 2002; two years later the production line for connecting rods for four-cylinder diesel engines went into operation. Audi Hungaria put a particularly powerful engine on the market in April 2006: the 5.2-liter ten-cylinder gasoline engine with FSI technology. Another milestone followed in the same year: With the Audi Valvelift System, the company presented a highly efficient and surprisingly simple technology for valve control.
Series production of the new four-cylinder common-rail diesel engines started in 2007. Common-rail fuel injection allows Audi und Volkswagen to expand their range of TDI engines offering high-torque combined with low fuel consumption and emissions.
The company has also been producing ten-cylinder biturbo engines since 2007 and twelve-cylinder engines since 2008. The engine development center has been providing local support for engineering activities in parallel with series production since 2001. And in addition to series engines, prototype engines have also been produced at the Győr engine ramp-up center since 2001.
Just a few months ago, Audi Hungaria opened a new car plant with a complete process chain and started series production of the A3 Sedan. In the future, the new Audi A3 Cabriolet and the successor generation of the Audi TT Coupe and Roadster will also be produced in Hungary. In total, approximately 125,000 automobiles will then drive off the assembly lines in Győr each year.
