TORONTO (April 18, 2016) – GM Canada announced its plans today for a new “Toronto GM Mobility Campus” located in southeast Toronto.  The company confirmed that it has completed its purchase of 721 Eastern Avenue, a seven acre site it plans to develop as a multi-use facility comprised of office space, research development facilities, GM vehicle sales and services including sales of electric vehicles and a public experience centre featuring innovations in mobility.

“We are very excited to be bringing GM Canada back into downtown Toronto with a future-oriented approach that will engage the community, universities, our customers and many other partners in the exciting transformations taking place in the automotive industry today,” said Steve Carlisle, president and managing director of General Motors of Canada. “Downtown Toronto will now be home to two dynamic growing industries – automotive technology and film production. It’s a double win.”

GM Canada is working in close partnership with Cinespace, the former owners of the site, to ensure a smooth transition for the property by collaborating with the film industry, the city and the local community. The GM purchase will facilitate Cinespace’s plans to pursue relocation and expansion options in the Toronto Port Lands and elsewhere.  Current film tenants will benefit from a cushion of time to manage this positive change.

Steve Mirkopoulos, president of Cinespace Film Studios, said, “We have an excellent partner in GM, who will continue the tradition of high-quality jobs at this site. This transaction also means no disruption for the vibrant film business in the short term, and provides us with the resources and time to develop our future vision for Cinespace.  This is a tremendous international-level win for the city of Toronto.”

Paula Fletcher, Toronto City Councillor for Ward 30 Toronto-Danforth added, “This is a major investment in our community by GM. We have fought long and hard for good jobs in our community and this will attract engineering, professional, high-paying jobs to this campus. It will also be a leading centre for green transportation and will allow the current film studio to be relocated from this site to bigger, better production facilities in the east end.”
